Description

Description: Adults with co-occurring mental illness and substance use disorders have far worse outcomes in employment, hospitalization, housing, and criminal justice involvement than their single disordered peers. This co-prevalence has been studied since the 1980s, yet despite this, most service systems were organized to treat individuals with a single disorder, excluding those with co-occurring disorders, or providing sequential or parallel treatments that were incompatible or in conflict with each other. Integrated and team-based services offer superior outcomes to parallel or sequential treatments, and call providers to develop interventions to assist individuals in moving toward recovery for both illnesses simultaneously. Integrated Dual Disorder Treatment (IDDT) was designed following systematic study of high intensity co-occurring disorder (COD) treatment needs and alterations of the Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) model. Within this training, attendees will understand the components of IDDT, including fidelity and outcome measurement. Specific attention will be paid to the core components of IDDT and of stage-matched assessment, treatment planning, and treatment interventions for adults with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders using the IDDT model.
 

Who Should Attend: This event is sponsored by the adult mental health block grant and is intended for persons who serve adults only struggling with severe mental illness and/or COD receiving services that are community-based/outpatient setting (does not include SUD providers, inpatient, or residential treatment) that is funded by a CMHSP or is a contractor of a CMHSP in the state of Michigan. It contains content appropriate for CEOs, COOs, clinical directors, supervisors, case managers, support coordinators, therapists, crisis workers, peer support specialists, nurses, advocates, and recovery coaches. Preference is given to individuals currently on IDDT and/or ACT/IDDT teams and those in process of joining an IDDT and/or ACT/IDDT teams.

Social Workers: This course qualifies for a maximum of 12 Continuing Education hours. The Community Mental Health Association is an approved provider with the Michigan Social Work Continuing Education Collaborative. Approved Provider Number: MICEC 060818. Qualifies as “face-to-face" (in-person) education.

 

 


MCBAP Specific

Substance Use Disorder Professionals: CMHA is approved by Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals (MCBAP). CMHA maintains the responsibility for the program and content. Substance Use Disorder professionals participating in this training may receive a maximum of 12 specific contact hours. It is important that attendees keep a copy of the conference program brochure containing the workshop descriptions along with their attendance record form.

Michelle Walkowski, LMSW, CAADC, has been in the field of social work with expertise in providing treatment to individuals with COD for over 20 years. Her career began with the focus on working with individuals experiencing homelessness in the greater Lansing area. As her career continued to evolve, she worked in many different areas of the public mental health system including day treatment, jail mental health services, intake, case management, outpatient, IDDT and ACT. She currently supervises an ACT/IDDT team for St. Clair County Community Mental Health where she has been employed for 19 years. Michelle is part of the current Michigan Fidelity Assistance Support Team (MIFAST) review team for ACT/IDDT and also provides training in providing and improving service delivery with evidence-based practices. She is passionate about providing the highest quality services to individuals while working to reduce stigma toward any COD within the community. She believes strongly in recovery and enjoys providing direct service, training, and consultation services. Michelle also worked for Michigan State University for 15 years as a field liaison; dedicated to working with students preparing to enter the field of social work.

Virtual Participation Guidelines

You are expected to actively participate in this virtual training. See below for additional information about virtual training requirements and recommendations:

  • After registering with CMHA, you will receive a confirmation email. You will be automatically registered in Zoom and will access the training through your account on CMHA’s registration site.
  • It is recommended that you log into the Zoom meeting through your account on CMHA’s registration site five to ten minutes before the training to test your equipment.
  • If you are experiencing technical issues prior to or during the training, please contact CE21 tech support to assist, but there is no guarantee that they can solve the issue. You are responsible for the functionality of your own equipment and being able to fully participate in the virtual training.
  • You must watch the virtual training LIVE to receive credit for the training.
  • Being on camera is strongly encouraged to ensure active participation.
  • To verify attendance, unique codes will be provided once at the beginning and at the end of each training day. You will be required to input the codes through your account on CMHA’s registration site at the end of the training. It is your responsibility to write down the code each day of the training. Do not share codes with other attendees.
  • Zoom reports will indicate arrival and departure times (for continuing education you must be logged into the virtual training within five minutes of the start of the training).
  • We do not allow participants to be driving during the training due to Michigan Distracted Driving Laws.
  • If you choose to call in only, you will not qualify for continuing education credits or attendance certificates.
  • Each person must have their own device – you cannot share a device or a Zoom link or allow others to log into your account on CMHA’s registration site.
  • Each training takes place in Eastern Standard Time.

Registration Details

Pre-registration questions will be asked during registration. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) will review and approve the attendance list. Registration does not guarantee admittance into this training. If you do not meet the criteria for the targeted audience for this training, your registration fee will be refunded, and you will be notified of this. Registration is required and space is limited. Registration closes five business days before the training.

 

Pre-Payment Required: Registration fee of $25 per person for virtual training and $40 per person for in-person training must be paid at the time of online registration with a valid credit card. Checks and purchase orders will not be accepted. Refunds will not be given to registrants who do not participate in the training for which they have registered (“no-shows”). The fee includes electronic materials and continuing education.  

Individuals registering for this grant-based event will be reviewed by MDHHS for approval to attend and may be contacted for more information and/or cancellation of registration if not within the parameters of the grant-specified audience.
